OK, the light has a little switch next to it with OFF-ON-DOOR on it. Just turn the light off until you need it. Left the hatch open again overnight with light off and it is dead again the next day. Charged battery back up and measured drain with hatch open - no dome light - and its 3-4 amps continuous - enough to kill the battery over night.
