I have a 1964 JD 4020 that I m trying to get up and running. I bought 2 new 12V batteries and tried hooking them up last night. How do I know which cable...Clean the elbow. My '64 4020, has issues with not turning over fast enough to start. Reasonably new starter, new batteries 550 cca, new cable clamps. Had a mech. look at it, and came down to ground strap corrosion. Installed new ground strap, (24v pos. ground system) connected right to diff bolt, after filing to clean metal.

The negative should go to the wire that is connected to ignition switch. Then the other wire is from the sending unit. You can open that panel by the removal of the 3/8 cap screw at the bottom and all of your switch wiring is in there. I have had these wires to come loose.

When this tractor was evening used daily we never had any trouble with the steering. Now that it only gets used very little we have steering trouble. Remove the screw, install a plastic line on the fitting and start the tractor. Turn the steering wheel to the RH stop position and open the fitting slowly. Let oil bleed out the line until no bubbles are present then tighten the fitting. Be careful as the steering wheel may jump after the bubbles are gone.
