A few years back my brand new (two or three months old at the time) Jeep Compass engine died in the middle of interstate 90 near Erie while I was overtaking a 18 wheeler doing 75 mph. Somehow I managed to keep my cool, let the truck pass and throw the car towards the highway shoulder.When the oil gets low the valves can't actuate and the vehicle shuts down. It was corrected by a recall/update. You should check with a Jeep dealer to see if your Compass had the recall performed. The ASD or Auto Shutdown circuit supplies 12V to the injectors, PCM, coil/coil packs (and ignition capacitor). In early TJs it also supplies power the O2 sensor Heaters. The ASD relay is controlled by the PCM in the same way as the fuel pump relay.

Many members, including myself have had this issue, though mine has not done it for some time and I never did replace the switch.
