A more general description of what deanjr suggested is, once you're in the core, look at the small parts sticking out of the inside of the core and look at the symbols on them. That tells you what resource to feed it to get the geometric tryptich. You can use the astropedia in the game's menu to match the symbol to the appropriate resource.The core is important along with the surface structures you see scattered about. Getting them all working will help you get to the end of the game. Spoiler heavy: You need to activate at least one of the surface structures with power before you head down to the core.
